TRUTH   JUSTICE   FREEDOM

This is Bhai Mahinder Singh, a resident of Kurukshetra in Harayana, who has been fortunately granted bail in April 2013. Since then he has been reunited with his family which has provided some relief for all of them. Bhai Sahib was arrested alongside Bhai Swaran Singh in connection to Dera Sacha Sauda attempted blast case in 2008. After coming under the radar of authorities since 2007 for protesting against the disrespect of Sri Guru Granth Sahib by Dera Sacha Sauda head, both Bhai Mahinder Singh and Bhai Swaran Singh were implicated in cases to deter any further protests.

Arrested from Haryana in February 2008, both men were taken to C.I.A. headquarters in Karnal and were subjected to 3rd degree torture. Bhai sahib’s arms and legs were broken and he was verbally abused. His faith and appearance as a Sikh were taunted and insulted as cigarette butts were thrown on him. This brutal torture lasted for 20 days till bhai sahib was sent to Karnal Jail.

Bhai sahib lived in a cramped cell with no facilities. He was let out for an hour each day in the small space in front of his cell for fresh air. During this time bhai sahib had nothing but his faith to rely on. He knew his family was unable to support themselves financially and this worried him deeply. Prior to arrest Bhai Mahinder Singh was running a successful trucking business but since his arrest the business had to close as there was no one to run it. Now on bail, it is very difficult for bhai sahib to start from scratch and provide for his family as they have been socially isolated due to the social stigma in regards to case against him.

Bhai Mahinder Singh’s son, now aged 17, had to leave his studies at the time of arrest and was forced to cut his hair in fear of attacks from Dera Sacha Sauda supporters. The whole family had to sell their home and move to an isolated farm where no one could cause direct harm. Not only this, Bhai sahib’s wife Bibi Daljit Kaur is suffering from cancer and they are unable to afford the costs for treatment and medical check-ups. All of the events have taken their toll on the whole family. Since this case has come to the attention of SOPW, we have been taking care of the family’s legal, welfare and medical costs and we can still do more. With your help, we would like to help bhai sahib’s son back into school so that he can make a better life for him and his family as well as help with medical costs for Bibi Daljit Kaur. We humbly request that you continue to support this endeavour.
